Ever since Tobias Lindholm first appeared on the international scene as co-director of prison drama R it was clear that he had the potential to lead a new generation of talent out of Denmark. Though R suffered somewhat from being released in the same year as Jacques Audiard’s similarly themed Oscar winner A Prophet it was clear that Lindholm was an uncommon talent and anticipation has run high for his sophomore feature – his first directing solo - A Hijacking (Kapringen). And considering that the film has just been announced as a World Premiere in Venice it would appear that anticipation was well founded.
In the Indian Ocean a cargo ship with seven seamen is captured by Somali pirates. From the shipping company’s headquarters, the CEO is thrown into a psychological game in his efforts to bring the seamen back home safely, while negotiating the lowest possible ransom. Meanwhile the seamen are held hostage on their ship off the Somali coast, desperately trying to stay calm without knowing whether or not they will come home alive…
Lindholm reunites with his R leading man Pilou Asbaek here and the results look fantastic. Check the first trailer.
