UPDATE: Our colleagues at OCEANUSLive.org have confirmed that the vessel is the Greek-owned tanker SMYRNI (IMO 9493779).
We have received credible reports that a merchant vessel which came under attack in the Northern Arabian Sea has been hijacked by pirates.
The vessel, allegedly a Liberian-flagged tanker, came under attack in position 15.58N0061.03E, approximately 285nm SSE of Masirah Oman at 0930 UTC. The reports state that armed pirates in two skiffs attacked the vessel and managed to board it. This vessel is now listed by MSCHOA as hijacked. We await further details on crew complement and confirmation of the vessel.
