A joint operation was conducted in various countries to suppress maritime piracy in the Indian Ocean, the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Gulf of Mora. After the Somali civil war in the 1990s and 2000s, Somali youth were victimized by piracy. Somali pirates became notorious in the Gulf of Aden and hindered trade along these routes. The US Navy, followed by the Indian Navy, deployed the largest number of ships for Operation Ocean Shield. The mission was officially terminated on December 16, 2016, as maritime piracy by Somali pirates was stopped. Only one or two speculated Somali maritime piracy events have occurred since the operation. The operation is seen as a huge victory in destroying maritime piracy.
