The opposition party “Georgia’s Way” demands Saakashvili’s presidential fund to allocate $1 million to pay ransom in order to release Georgian sailors captured by Somali pirates, the party’s youth wing head Mamuka Baliashvilisaid.
Fifteen Georgian sailors were captured by Somali pirates in September last year.
“So far, we have not heard any serious statements about the measures taken to release the sailors, except the president’s statement made during a TV space bridge on Jan. 25. Then Saakashvili said that he is working on this issue, but he can not speak openly on this subject when asked whether the government will pay a ransom for sailors Saakashvili said to pay a ransom for the sailors. The statement made by the Economy Minister Vera Kobalia, who stressed the state does not intend to pay the ransom, should also be noted,” Baliashvili said.
