GL tells Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam :
External Affairs Minister Prof. G. L. Peiris, delivering a lecture on Maritime Security at Vietnam Diplomatic Academy on the invitation of the Vietnamese government, explained the crucial role played by the Sri Lanka Navy in ensuring the security of sea lanes around the island.
He addressed in particular the tasks being carried out by the Sri Lanka Navy in respect of the control of people smuggling and anti-piracy initiatives. He said that Sri Lanka attaches special importance to the whole range of issues connected with money laundering, proliferation of small arms and rendering of all assistance regarding counter-terrorism activities.
The lecture was the minister’s final engagement on the two day official visit, during which he had meetings with Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh and Justice Minister Ha Hung Cuong, in addition to co-chairing the Third Sri Lanka Vietnam Joint Commission on Economic, Scientific and Technological Co-operation held in Hanoi.
