WANTED: Volunteers wishing to help keep an ancient Welsh tradition alive in the Upper Swansea Valley . . . must be comfortable around a horse’s skull.
The Ystradgynlais Mari Lwyd Group has declared its seasonal sortie around the area a success again this year but is not going to rest on its laurels.
The ancient Welsh midwinter traditional custom involves a party carrying a decorated horse skull visiting homes, traditionally seeking food and drink.
The custom is being kept alive by the volunteers but they are already looking for others to come on board to ensure the tradition can continue.
A spokeswoman said: “The aim of the Ystradgynlais Mari Lwyd group is to keep this ancient tradition alive.
“Having put things away now for another year, we shall review our performances and look at further enhancements such as the inclusion of a punco, and a little Punch and Judy sketch perhaps, while still maintaining the true spirit of the Mari.
“We have thanked all those who supported us and made donations, ensuring them that monies will be used to keep the group together and to maintain costumes and resources. As in previous years, a collection for local charities took place in Ystradgynlais before Christmas and this year we chose to support the local community car scheme.”
The group received a warm welcome over the Christmas period in nursing homes, shops and from hospitals in Ystragynlais, Abercrave and Coelbren before heading for St Mary’s Church in Clydach to greet a number of assembled local schoolchildren, their teachers and members of the public.
Mari also joined the congregation at Capel Gellionnen to welcome in the new year.
The spokeswoman added: “We would welcome new members, especially musicians and anyone who could carry the Mari. If you would like to join us email Maureen at mountford963@btinternet.com.”
