Police and government agencies are bracing for the influx of passengers in land and sea terminals by placing help desks as initial measures for the Holy Week breaks.
The Land Transportation Office has placed public assistance desks at north and south bus terminals to ensure hassle-free travels for passengers.
Elmar Defensor, of the LTO Bacolod Office-Law Enforcement Unit, said the agency is also checking buses for defects to avoid accidents on the road.
“LTO is also warning commuters against colorum vans. They might be an easy and comfortable way to travel but they are violating the law,” he said.
Defensor said LTO has been impounding vans caught without licenses. Those caught violating must pay a fine of P200,000, he said.
The Department of Transportation and Communication, through the Philippine Coast Guard and Philippine National Police-Maritime Command, has also placed help desks at the Bredco and Banago ports in line with Oplan Ligtas Biyahe.
Bomb-sniffing dogs, and regular luggage check-ups are conducted in the sea terminals.
Two officers are stationed in Banago while four are in place at Bredco port, who will continue police visibility until March 28, Monday.
Earlier this week, Weesam owner Frank Carbon requested police visibility at the sea port to ensure safety and order in the terminal. He said the hot weather and long passenger queues might lead to temperamental customers.
Carbon said passengers are expected to mass starting this afternoon and peak tomorrow morning.
Defensor also advised commuters to pack lightweight luggage and become vigilant about thieves in sea, land and air terminals alike.*KBC
