Frantic search continued on Tuesday for seven sailors missing after a south Korean cargo ship sank in the stormy South Chaina Sea.
The missing — four from Myanmar and three South Koreans — were members of the 21-crew of the 15,000-ton ‘Bright Ruby’ that went down on Monday afternoon while sailing from Malaysia to mainland China.
Fourteen crew members, including six South Koreans, were rescued by other ships and rescue workers at the scene, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported quoting Foreign Ministry officials.
The South Korean government was closely cooperating with Hong Kong and Vietnamese maritime police to search for the missing crew, while China was set to deploy two naval ships to support the rescue work, they said.
The vessel which went down some 350 nautical miles south of Hong Kong waters around 4:00 p.m. on Monday (Korean time) was the one hijacked by Somali pirates off the Gulf of Aden in September 2008. The ship and its eight South Korean crew were released after 37 days in captivity, the official said.
